WEDNESDAY, 10/19/11

Here is the update I received from Bro. Jerry – Sharlynn Theobald is at home but her surgery was maybe more than they expected; Betty Hamil’s MRI revealed no problems; Louise Morris remains about the same – sleeping a lot and having mini seizures; Larry Thompson is at home recovering from his surgery; Kathleen Henderson came home from the hospital; Tena Hovel’s dad was told by the doctors that his cancer is inoperable; Lois Kirschenman was told there are some new cancer spots and she will receive an experimental treatment.  Pray for these folks.

As we were having the evening session in the conference, Bro. Johnny Tucker’s defibrillator went off.  Not sure of all the details be he seemed to be fine before we went to bed last night.  This is a first for him and, obviously, his family is concerned with him being out of the country.

I received an e-mail from Mike Parker telling me that three of his four children were involved in a head on automobile accident on Sunday night.  Mike & Carla were in Guatemala at the time while the children were in Tennessee.  Their daughter, Katie, has two broken arms and a steel plate.

We had a day of no rain yesterday but it is raining pretty significantly this morning.  The attendance was good considering all things – over 200 but not sure how close to 300.  Jack Bailey & Terry Rainey both did great jobs sharing the Word.  Joe David Bailey, Eddie Burdette, Jim Chinners and Bro. Johnny all preach today.  Pray for them as well as the breakout sessions.

We are on a normal schedule for today at Friendship.  Morning service followed by the evening activities.  I pray that many members of the Friendship family will attend.

I pray that you will have a great Wednesday with Jesus.

TUESDAY, 10/18/11

Obviously, I am in Guatemala.  I do not have any updates from home so I will go by the adage that “no news is good news!”  I do ask that you keep praying for Adam & Amanda Blackwell’s infant son, Xavier, as one of the holes in his heart could require surgery fairly soon.  This is Larry & Trish’s grandson.

All six of us arrived safely into Guatemala yesterday with Dr. Jack & Joe David bringing up the rear around 9:00PM local time.  It rained yesterday but not anything tremendous.  We thank God for traveling mercies.

The Guatemalan people tend to be procrastinators when it comes to signing up for conferences.  Last year at this point, we had about 20 pastors signed up.  This year there are already 200 registered and some arrived last night fearing they would not be able to get him today due to the road conditions.  The El Salvadoran pastors are coming too.  Pray that many of the pastors will be able to get here to be encouraged.  Again, thank you to each person who has helped sponsor this conference – may God bless you!

I pray that you will have a great Tuesday with Jesus.

MONDAY, 10/17/11

Sorry this entry is late.  Packed my computer around 2:00AM and figured I would blog from the Mobile airport around 5:00AM.  No connection there and none on the stump jumper from MOB to ATL.  Sitting in the Atlanta airport waiting to board the flight to Guatemala.

Bo told me last night that Louise Morris had some seizures yesterday afternoon.  They had stopped and she was resting.  The family asks for your continued prayer support but also respectfully asks for limited visitors.  This is a great family and I know you will respect their wishes as they want Miss Louise to rest as much as possible.  Bro. Jerry or Bro. Kerry will visit each day this week.  Pray for Louise.

Pattie’s grandson, Gage, remains at home with his family beside him.  Pray for mercy.

Betty Hamil is having a MRI today.  Pray for her.

Sharlynn Theobald is having a surgical procedure tomorrow.  Pray for her.

Earl Gunter will have his pacemaker replaced on Wednesday and then begins radiation on Thursday.  Pray for Earl.

Larry Thompson is at home recovering from his surgery.  It went well.  Pray for him.

I am probably leaving someone off  this list.  Obviously, we want to pray for all those who are battling cancer.

The men left in El Salvador made it to Guatemala yesterday in nine hours!  (Normally a 3 – 5 hour trip).  They say mudslides, rockslides and one accident but arrived at the mission house safe and sound – praise the Lord!  Mark Mast tells me that it has rained more since I left on Friday than it did the other days combined – unbelievable!  Paul Leytham & Tico Vargas both tell me that severe rain is in the forecast for Guatemala every day this week.  Some major mudslides have taken place in the areas where many of the pastors are supposed to come from so we will see.  Pray!

Congratulations to the AU Tigers on their victory this past Saturday.  Deacon Bill – I almost deleted your comment this morning (which is when I received it) but decided to post it anyway.  I have some happy friends in Michigan (State fans) today and the rest are sad today (Wolverines, Tigers, & Lions).

Pray for us as we travel today and for the pastors who will attend the conference.

I pray that you will have a great Monday with Jesus.

FRIDAY, 10/14/11 (UPDATED)

No internet and now limited internet.  You cannot believe the amount of rain that has fallen/is falling in El Salvador.  I am praying that our flights can leave today, that the folks who need to get back to Guatemala can do so, et cetera.  I will write more from the airport if a signal is available.

Remember to pray for the womens conference tonight.  Pray for Gage.

UPDATE BEGINS HERE – Larry Thompson had surgery this morning.  I think he will be in the hospital for several days. (I think!)

Bro. Jerry sent me an e-mail saying Miss Kathleen Henderson has been hospitalized again.  Pray for her.

I am aboard a Delta flight somewhere over the Gulf of Mexico.  Clint Landry is with me even though he was supposed to fly out of Guatemala City.  The rains have been torrential this week in El Salvador and Guatemala.  I was concerned that we might not get out of the country this morning as they were talking about going on red alert which means the airport shuts down (or so I was told).  I saw Pastor Abel’s flight leave as we were waiting next in line.  Pray that Dr. Tico and the others can get back into Guatemala today.  Several of the crossings are out and the line at the one that is open is long.  Deaths, mudslides, downed trees, flooded houses/businesses, et cetera have been the norm this week in these two Central America countries.

Lord willing, I will be in the services this Sunday.  Do not forget that “Red Roots” will be in both of the morning services and then will have the entire evening service.  I pray that many members of the Friendship family will join me in Bible study and prayer.  One of our deacons has already told me that he is missing Sunday morning but claims it is not because of the expected outcome of the Bama versus Ole Miss game (he is a huge Ole Miss fan).

I pray that you will have a great rest of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with Jesus.

THURSDAY, 10/13/11

Bro. Jerry, Bro. Kerry, & Bro. Chris are all three off today as they will be occupied tomorrow with the women’s conference.  However, the church office is open today from 8:00AM – 12:00PM and 1:00PM – 5:00PM.

Pattie Suthoff graciously posted another update via a comment on yesterday’s blog entry.  It appears Gage is weakening rather rapidly.  Pray for Gage, his mother, Pattie, and the entire family.

Nancy West was discharged from the hospital yesterday.  Peggy Benefield was taken to the hospital with chest pains but everything checked out okay.  (I am thinking it is simply having to live with Herbert – LOL!)

I do not know what it means but El Salvador is under an “orange” alert on the coast and a “yellow” alert in San Salvador.  Here is what I do know – it has basically rained non stop since we landed Monday afternoon.  The locals tell me that this is very unusual even though it is the rainy season.  My pastor friend, Jack Bailey, says he loves the rain – he should be here this week!

Yesterday’s conference sessions went well.  Pastor Abel & Pastor Mark did great jobs of sharing through the messages.  Today, Pastor Clint & Pastor Terry will preach.  Pray for these sessions.

My friends in Michigan are still giddy over the Lions but are concerned with their beloved Tigers being in a 3-1 hole.  However, Verlander is on the mound for the next game so all is not lost.

Speaking of Michigan, the Wolverines travel to East Lansing this Saturday.  Should be a good game.  I will get Joe David to make a prediction and then I will lean the opposite direction!

I pray that you will have a great Thursday with Jesus.

WEDNESDAY, 10/12/11 (UPDATED)

You can read Pattie Suthoff’s comment on yesterday’s entry to get an update on her grandson, Gage.  The doctors are not hopeful.  Pray for Gage, his mother, Callie, Pattie, and the entire family.

Nancy West did well through her surgery.  Miss Ellen Rhoads remains hospitalized.  Mitchel Fox was hospitalized yesterday and was to remain for at least one night.  Pray for these folks.

Jeff Long’s sister-in-law, Barbara, passed away.  We have had her on our prayer list for a long time.  The funeral will take place today and either Bro. Jerry or Bro. Kerry will attend in my absence.

We will host the singing group “The Red Roots” this Sunday in all three of our services.  They will share a song or two in the morning services and then have the entire evening service.  These are triplets from the Hurley, MS area.

The first day of the pastors’ conference in El Salvador went well.  The attendance was lower than we anticipated but it has been raining and raining and raining.  Last night, Dr. Tico said they put out some kind of warning related to mud slides.  (We are safe as we are not in an area where mudslides could happen)  These men are staying at home and attending the conference so the rains probably had a negative effect on some of them.  We are talking serious rains!

Pray today as Pastor Abel & Pastor Mark will be preaching in the main sessions.  All of the men will be leading breakout sessions again.  Thank you for your prayer support.

We are on a normal schedule today at Friendship with the morning service and evening Bible studies/classes/service.  I pray a good number of the Friendship family will attend.

I pray that you will have a great Wednesday with Jesus.

TUESDAY, 10/11/11

I would ask you to pray for Nancy West this morning as she will be having surgery around 8:30AM.  I do not have any updates on the other folks but do ask that you pray for those battling cancer.

GROW ministries takes place tonight.  I am not sure which team is responsible for tonight but you can contact Bro. Jerry for more information.

The womens’ conference takes place this Friday night, 10/14.  Tickets are still available.  Contact Betty Creech for more information.

Yesterday was a long day for the eight guys who traveled to El Salvador for the pastors’ conference.  It was especially long for Jerry Whitmore and Clint Landry as they did not arrive until shortly after 8:00PM.  Dr. Tico also had a long day.  He is such a huge help to GRACE Ministries.  Our gifts to be given to the ES pastors remain in Guatemala as the customs officials wanted a fairly large sum of money to bring them into ES.  Pray that we can find favor with the officials who can allow them in either at no cost or, at the very least, a reduced cost.

Pray for Bro. Johnny Tucker, Bro. Jerry Whitmore, and Bro. Robbie Howard as they will be preaching in the main sessions today.  All of the men will be teaching breakout sessions in the afternoon.

So the NBA has cancelled the first two weeks of their upcoming (?) season – does John Q Public care?  I will not lose any sleep if they never play again and I am a basketball fan.

I pray that you will have a great Tuesday with Jesus.

MONDAY, 10/10/11

It is a little after 5:00AM and I as sitting in the Mobile airport talking to Pastor Clint Landry.  Jerry & Gloria Whitmore just walked by heading to their gate.  We are waiting on Bro. Robbie & Bro. Johnny to pass by too.  The four of them are flying Continental while Pastor Clint and I are flying Delta.  Mark Mast & Terry Napier will meet me in Atlanta for the flight to El Salvador.  Abel Garcia will meet Bro. Johnny & Bro. Robbie in Houston for the flight to ES.  Clint & Jerry will fly into Guatemala City and then ride to ES with Dr. Tico.  Prayerfully, we will all get to ES at some point this afternoon.

What a blessing Bro. Johnny was to the Friendship family yesterday in all three of the services.  I appreciate his ministry and your faithfulness.  You were a blessing to him by attending and you gave a wonderful love offering.  Great day!

Nancy West will have surgery tomorrow morning.  Larry Thompson will have surgery on Friday morning.  Mitchel Fox came home from the hospital on Saturday.  Bro. Jerry is preaching the funeral service for Miss Barbara Parker this morning.

Joe David Bailey did a great job of picking UT over OU this past weekend.

The gate agent is calling so I will end this post.  I pray that you will have a great Monday with Jesus.

FRIDAY, 10/7/11

As you know, Lisa and I are in the Holland, Michigan area staying with Tom & Shari Compagner.  I do not have any updates on the folks I mentioned yesterday.  However, I would ask that you pray for Greg Boutwell as he is having a surgical procedure done this morning.

Also, the lady I visited on Wednesday passed away either during that night or yesterday morning.  Pray for that family.  This is an opportunity for the members of the Friendship family to do ministry and I appreciate those who are doing just that.

We had a blessed time last night with one hundred and something folks from the Holland area.  We even had folks drive up from Kalamazoo which is an hour away.  The Lord has really blessed us with great friends and support from this area.  Laura Sytsma, Dave Westhouse, Eric DeYoung, and Dean Kapenga did a very nice job of sharing what the Lord has done in their churches as a result of being involved with GRACE Ministries.

Lisa and I have a meeting this morning and then we head to the airport.  Pray for our safety in travel.

Remember to pray for our services this Sunday as we will host the ministry of Evangelist Johnny Tucker.

I pray that you will have a great weekend with Jesus.

THURSDAY, 10/6/11

Last night was a first for the Friendship family as our Spanish ministry held a Wednesday night Bible study.  They are studying the fruit of the Spirit.  It is 3:00AM so I have not talked to Rita or Becky yet to see how it went.

Peggy Benefield got a good report from her cath – no blockages.  Mitchel Fox was admitted to the hospital late yesterday afternoon.  I was called to visit with a lady who is seemingly near passing after an eleven month battle with cancer.  Thanks to Cecil & Myrtle for going to that home to minister also.  Rachel Jackson’s grandmother remains in CCU.  Merwyn Gunter was supposed to come home yesterday.  Greg Boutwell is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning.  Anna Carol Bosarge saw the doctor again yesterday afternoon.  Elaine Brown took a fall and broke a bone in her hand.  Pattie Suthoff’s grandson, Gage, has been placed under hospice care.  Pray for all of these folks.

Lisa and I are flying to Grand Rapids, MI this morning in order to take part in the annual GRACE Ministries pig roast tonight.  We fly back tomorrow and, Lord willing, I will be present in the services this Sunday.  Pray for our safety in travel.

Chris put me onto a site to automatically send these blogs to e-mail accounts but it takes too long.  Pastor Travis thinks we should have an app?

I mowed grass early yesterday morning.  Soy had his bedroom windows raised so I serenaded him with Peg McKamey’s “God On The Mountain” song.  He loved it!

I pray that you will have a great Thursday with Jesus.
