FRIDAY, 1/31/14

Today’s Bible reading – Exodus 12:14-13:16, Matthew 20:29-21:22, Psalm 25:16-22, Proverbs 6:12-15

I apologize for the lateness of this entry.  Honestly, Lisa had to remind me to post as she was looking for today’s Bible readings.  If you are looking for someone to blame, blame Mark Mast!

You would do well to sign the petition that Bill Kendrick has been placing in the comment section on these entries.  Important!

Tonight provides the opportunity for the Friendship family to do ministry as a collective body by simply attending the memorial service for Pancho Arriola, father of Adriana and Sofie.  The visitation with the girls will begin at 6:00PM in the church auditorium.  The service will begin at 7:00PM (if not before).  Afterwards, there will be a time of fellowship for all with sweets and drinks.

Again, instead of flowers, there will be a basket for cards and/or financial donations to help get Adriana & Sophie to Guatemala as soon as possible.  Obviously, any donation is free will.  You are not expected to bring a card or financial gift.  The greatest thing the girls need is our love and support which we can give simply by being there tonight.

Rob Nevin was discharged from the hospital yesterday.  He will be doing therapy at home.

Amy Huhn’s mother did not get a good report about her cancer this week.  She, and her family, have some tough decisions to make regarding the next step.

I do not have an update on Carolyn Blaylock or Bill Goff.  Bro. Jerry visited them yesterday as I went to New Orleans.  I have not spoken to Bro. Jerry since I got back after the office closed.

It is “possible” that the folks who will be bringing a motion regarding our video system in the auditorium could do so this Sunday night, 2/2.  The key word is “possible.”  Just a FYI for the Friendship family.

Speaking of Sunday night, we are on a regular schedule all day Sunday.  Rumor has it that there will be a special football game on television beginning around 5:30PM.  That will not affect our evening service.  We should be dismissed around 7:00PM as usual.

We need folks to sign up for the pictorial directory.  Again, if everyone does not participate, it will not be as useful as planned.  You can sign up this Sunday in the foyer of the auditorium.

I pray that you will have a great Friday with Jesus.

SPECIAL MEMORIAL SERVICE – FRIDAY, 1/31/14

Rita, Adriana & Sofie will not be able to travel to Guatemala for the funeral service for Pancho Arriola, Adriana’s & Sofie’s father.  It is a situation that is out of their control and involves passports, visas, biometrics, the winter weather, et cetera.  Rita has tried really, really hard to make it happen and I commend her for her efforts.  I have spoken to Adriana and she understands the situation.  She is not happy about it but understands.  Sofie will probably not understand as well simply because of age.  That is understandable.

So, I asked Rita and Adriana if we could have a memorial service for Pancho and they agreed.  Hopefully, this will “help” in a limited way to bring a bit of closure for the girls.

This memorial service will take place tomorrow night, 1/31, beginning with a visitation at 6:00PM which will last until the service at 7:00PM.  The service itself will be brief probably lasting thirty minutes or so.  We have chosen to have this service tomorrow so it will coincide date wise with the actual service in Guatemala.

Instead of flowers, I am asking that folks consider making a financial donation to help Rita and the girls get to Guatemala as soon as possible in order for the girls to see their paternal family and the burial place of their father.  This will involve airfares and legal documents for the girls.  You will be able to make a donation at the visitation and/or service tomorrow night.  Out of town friends can send donations to P.O. Box 756 Grand Bay, AL 36541.  Please mark it as being for the Arriola girls.  Questions?  Contact me.

Friendship family, Rita, Adriana & Sofie mean much to our church.  I am calling on you to do whatever it takes to attend the visitation and/or service to show them our support.  Please use social media, the phone, et cetera to spread the word.

Rita’s Sunday School class will provide a meal for the family.  Becky Hatcher will coordinate a fellowship with sweets and drinks that will take place in the fellowship hall after the service for anyone who wishes to spend more time with Rita, Adriana and Sofie.  If you want to help with the fellowship, contact Becky personally.

Pray for Adriana and Sofie.  I cannot imagine.

Thank you in advance for ministering to this family.

THURSDAY, 1/30/14

Today’s Bible reading –  Exodus 10:1-12:13, Matthew 20:1-28, Psalm 25:1-15, Proverbs 6:6-11

I had written yesterday that, even though the church office was closed, the ministerial staff stood ready in the event of an emergency.  Around 4:00PM, Bro. Chris and I were called to Rita Padilla’s house as they had just gotten word that Pancho Arriola, father of Adriana & Sofia, had tragically passed from this life in a parasailing accident in Panajachel, Guatemala.  Pray for the family and that Rita and the girls can get there for the service.  Folks, that will take a small miracle.

The doctors contemplated sending Rob Nevin home yesterday but that did not happen.  He can get the necessary therapies at home.

I did not travel to the hospital yesterday so I do not have an update on Carolyn Blaylock or Bill Goff.  Hope to see them this morning.

I am assuming that Carla did not have her scans yesterday because of the road conditions.

The church office is open today from 8:00AM until noon and 1:00PM until 5:00PM.

Our first GRACE Ministries team of 2014 is scheduled to fly into Guatemala today.  They will be departing from Grand Rapids, St Louis, Atlanta and New Orleans.  Yesterday was a full morning of trying to reschedule flights because of cancellations.  Pastor Bob Harvey is leading this team.  You give an Auburn man one job to do and look at the mess he has created!  Pray that all goes well in their travels.  I will most likely be driving three of them to the New Orleans airport.

I pray that you will have a great Thursday with Jesus.

WEDNESDAY, 1/29/14

Bible reading for today – Exodus 8:1-9:35, Matthew 19:13-30, Psalm 24:1-10, Proverbs 6:1-5

IMPORTANT – due to the wintry weather conditions in our area, we will NOT be having any services/classes/Bible studies this morning or tonight.  Please share this with other members of the Friendship family.  We had enough sleet/freezing rain yesterday and last night to make the roads slick.  The temperatures are not expected to get above freezing except for about four hours today so the icy conditions could exist throughout the day and into the night.  We do not want to be responsible for anyone possibly being in harm’s way in their travels to and from church.

I know most folks do not but I enjoy these colder temperatures and the wintry weather conditions.  I certainly do not want anyone to get injured due to the conditions but winter is supposed to be different from the other three seasons.  Wonder what Al thinks about these deep freezes that have affected the USA this winter?

As it was posted yesterday, Rob’s family has asked for privacy i.e. no visitors at the present time.  Please do not assume that you are an “exception” and go anyway.  Lets honor their request.  Pray for Rob’s healing.  He needs a touch from God.

Carolyn Blaylock looked and sounded much better yesterday.  She said that she felt better too.

Bill Goff was feeling good and would have gone home yesterday but his blood pressure is too low.  The doctor does not want to discharge him until he figures out what is causing this problem.

Visited seven folks in the convalescent home yesterday morning.  Everyone seemed to be doing well with the exception of Miss Mulkey.  She said that she simply did not feel well.

Carla Kyser had a scan on Monday and is scheduled to have another one today (if I remember correctly).  Pray for her to get good results.

I think that I heard that Courtney Hubbard recently got a good report from the doctors.

Larry & Judy Whitehurst got snowed/iced in up in Starkville after the funeral yesterday.  I imagine Larry will be home today regardless of the weather as there are only so many more days left in the deer hunting season.  Pray for their travels.

The church office is closed today but the ministerial staff stands by in the event of an emergency.

I pray that you will have a great Wednesday with Jesus.

WEDNESDAY SERVICES CANCELLED – CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED

After prayer, consideration, consultation with the deacons, and weather watching, the decision has been made to close the church office tomorrow and cancel all Wednesday services/classes – morning and evening.  Please pass the word to others who may not read the blog.

It totally goes against my grain to cancel services but I do not want anyone to be potentially placed in harm’s way.  Sammy & Myrtle are grateful!

Please thank you in advance for your understanding.

DO NOT DISTURB!

The Nevin family has posted a “Do Not Disturb” sign on Rob’s hospital room door.  I totally agree with this move as Rob is very sick.  Please respect their request regardless of your position in the church, friendship, neighbor, et cetera.

TUESDAY, 1/28/14

Today’s Bible reading – Exodus 5:22-7:25, Matthew 18:21-19:12, Psalm 23:1-6, Proverbs 5:22-23

Here is what Reb Nevin posted as a comment on yesterday’s entry – “Rob had a very rough night…still has severe headache…he was able to eat broth and jello last night and swallow pills…PTL….keep the prayers coming…Our son,Robert, is also here…”

Folks, the very fact that he can swallow is a victory.  Keep praying for Rob and family.

Bill Goff had a stent placed in one of his carotid arteries yesterday as the blockage was at 90%.  Bernard and I prayed with him beforehand and then Bro. Jerry went to check on him.

Carolyn Blaylock is retaining fluid which is affecting her ability to breathe.  Pray that the doctors can find a way to give her some relief.  They drained the fluid on Sunday which provided immediate relief.

No change in Nikki’s situation in Jackson, MS.

The funeral service for Ed Whitehurst takes place today at 2:00PM in the Starkville, MS area.  Pray for the Whitehurst family.

It appears that we could have precipitation in the form of sleet, freezing rain, and possibly snow very late all afternoon and into the early morning hours.  Plans call for the church office to be open.

How about our church services for tomorrow morning and evening?  As it presently stands based on the forecast, we are good to go!  Now, I do not want anyone to take any chances if the conditions are deemed unsafe by you or the temperatures are just too cold.  Obviously, I am talking to the older people like Sammy & Myrtle Bowden but it can be applied to everyone.  Use sound judgment.

Bernard Suthoff went with me to Starkville and back yesterday.  Can you say “mistake?”  LOL.  My right ear is killing me from over use!  My wallet is much lighter as we stopped about every fifteen minutes to get him a “snack” and he seemingly did not have his wallet.  I felt like I was traveling with a woman as he had to “go” about every thirty miles.  It is designed to be about a nine hour trip and we were able to squeeze it in to fifteen hours!  Folks, we left Providence Hospital and he had me stop on Schillinger’s Road for lunch!  Reminded me of an old song, “Why Me Lord?”  Taking Bernard with you makes one miss having Soy tag along!

Be safe today, tonight and in the morning.

I pray that you will have a great Tuesday with Jesus.

MONDAY, 1/27/14

Today’s Bible reading – Exodus 4:1-5:21, Matthew 18:1-20, Psalm 22:19-31, Proverbs 5:15-21

It is now 5:30AM.  Rob Nevin did indeed suffer a stroke somewhere between 1:00 – 1:30AM.  He has been moved to NICU.  Initially lost use of his right arm but had regained a good bit of use while in the ER.  However, as of this writing, Rob has not been able to speak.  Pray for Rob & Reb.  Their daughter, Holly, who is a PA will be catching a flight from Indiana this morning.  Pray for safety in travel.

Bro. Jerry & Miss Gloria Whitmore drove Reb to the hospital and are still with her.  I really appreciate their ministry to Rob & Reb during this difficult time.

Bill Goff was admitted to the hospital yesterday.

Carolyn Blaylock was admitted to the hospital last night.

Nikki Burwell remains basically the same.  Her mother, Miss Mary, gave me an update following last night’s service.  They will not try to awaken her before Thursday.

The visitation with the Ed Whitehurst family takes place tonight in Starkville, MS.  I had plans to travel there for the funeral tomorrow afternoon but the weather forecast will most likely change those plans.  So, I will most likely travel to the visitation tonight instead.  Pray for Larry and the entire Whitehurst family.

Good services yesterday.  What a joy to see Paul Seymour follow Jesus in believer’s baptism as a part of our evening service.

I pray that you will have a great Monday with Jesus.

CALL TO PRAYER FOR ROB NEVIN

It is shortly before 2:00AM and Rob Nevin has just been taken to Providence Hospital with a possible stroke.  You now know everything that I know at this point in time.  I simply ask you to pray and I will update once I get to the hospital and have more definitive information.  Pray for Rob and Reb.
