FRIDAY, 7/15/11

Pastor Travis Northcutt called me late yesterday afternoon to let me know that the North Carolina folks had arrived safely to the mission house.  I tracked Bro. Jerry and the folks on Delta until they landed in Guatemala City around 9:30PM our time.  I did not hear from them after that point (was not expecting to) but assume all is well.  Pray for them as they begin ministering by building houses, et cetera today.  We thank God for His protection in their travels.

Sherry Howell and I communicated briefly yesterday afternoon but I do not have a lot of details.  Chris broke his foot last weekend and has been on crutches.  He saw the doctor yesterday and was hopefully going to get a walking boot or something to make his getting around easier.  Gunnar, their newborn son, has a cyst (I believe that is what they are calling it) in his head that will require some attention.  Sherry goes back to the doctor next week.  Pray for them.

My challenge to the Friendship family is for those of us in town to be faithful this weekend.  We have the folks in Guatemala and I know of several others who are out of town.  You have done well thus far this summer and I encourage you to “not grow weary” in well doing.  We have three more Sundays in this church year and I pray that we will finish well.

Lisa, Deidra, Dana & Gina are in OB for a couple of days.  Translated – I am having to take care of Soy!  He wanted to spend the night with me last night but I locked the doors, turned the lights off, set the alarm and just generally gave the appearance that I was not at home.  He still kept ringing the door bell.  Finally, I told him the pizza delivery guys were coming to house between 1:00 – 6:00AM so he needed to be home to get the pizza.  It worked!  Today, he wants me to take him swimming!

Speaking of Soy & Deidra, they have decided against using the name Soyetta Janell and have gone for Elisabeth Leigh Ann.  Myrna & I are not happy campers at this point and will continue to lobby for Soyetta!

I pray that you will have a great weekend with Jesus.  Go to church!

THURSDAY, 7/14/11

What a blessed Wednesday we had in our services/Bible studies!  I do not know about the student ministry numbers but the attendance in our morning service and two evening services was excellent.  Our 7:00PM folks sat in the dark since the electricity was out but no one complained (they are used to bad preaching!) and we had a good study.  Betty Creech’s cousin, Becky Thompson, from Arkansas sang in the morning service and did a very nice job.  We praise God for His continued blessings on the Friendship family.

Bro. Jerry’s team leaves the church at 11:30AM today bound for Guatemala.  They are excited and have already had to use that flexible mindset.  Pray that they will have a blessed trip.

We will have something new in our 8:00AM service beginning in August.  That something is that we will offer extended care for 3, 4, & 5 year olds.  The concept is Bro. Jerry’s.  Stephanie Dunkley has graciously agreed to be the teacher.  She will teach, attend Sunday School, and then take part in our 10:30AM service.  This will give young families more options as to the morning services.  Pass the word!

I mentioned a story in last night’s service about someone trying to locate someone from her childhood days who had been so kind.  She located her yesterday afternoon via the internet.  (Thanks Al!)  She had not made contact but at least knows where she is now.  Great story of compassion and giving!  Who does God want you to minister to today?

USA! USA! USA!  I am so pumped over the women’s soccer victory yesterday morning!  What time is the game Sunday?

I pray that you will have a great Thursday with Jesus.

WEDNESDAY, 7/13/11

The team presently using the L.G. Camp, Jr. mission house in Guatemala is being led by Bro. Johnny & Miss Judy Tucker.  Today is their final full day of ministry as they travel home tomorrow.  Pray that they will have a blessed day of ministry.  I assume that today will include the dedication of the houses they have built this week.

Bro. Jerry’s GRACE team leaves for Guatemala tomorrow.  Pastor Travis and his folks leave early from Atlanta while Bro. Jerry and the others leave from Mobile tomorrow afternoon.  Pray for these folks as they finalize everything today in preparation for the trip.

One of the highlights for Bro. Jerry’s team will be the building of three houses in honor of Louise Morris.  She has been a permanent fixture on this team for years but will have to sit this trip out.  These houses are a good way to honor her, help a family, and glorify God.

We are on a regular schedule today with our services.  It puts me in a tough spot regarding the 10:00AM service as the USA women’s soccer game begins at 10:30AM.  What is a guy supposed to do?

I pray that you will have a great Wednesday with Jesus.

TUESDAY, 7/12/11

Today is a bittersweet day for me.  Sweet because it was 31 years ago this evening that Lisa and I stood at the altar in Friendship Baptist Church and became Mr. & Mrs.  I still stand amazed that she said “yes” and “I do!”  (I am just thankful that she did not know any Turrentines prior to our wedding date!)  God has blessed me with an amazing wife!  I am biased!  I am blessed!

Bitter?  Thirty one years ago today Charles became my father-in-law!  Along with the good (great) comes bad!  LOL!  I did get an awesome mother-in-law out of the deal though.  God is good!

By the way, Lisa and I share our anniversary date with my paternal grandparents and my sister, Melissa, and her husband, Tony.  Happy anniversary to Tony & Melissa too!

Word is that Curtis & Myrna (from Smyrna) are excited that Soy & Deidra have chosen the name Soyetta Janell Taylor for the baby.  She can share the name but I sure hope she does not look like him!

Sueanna & Tate came home yesterday.  All is well.  We thank God for his safe delivery.

Steven & Morgan Kelley continue to wait for the birth of Kypton Kelley.  If nothing changes, that birth should take place later this week.  Pray for them.

Bro. Jerry’s GRACE team will meet at 6:00PM tonight to pack the extra suitcases for their trip.

God used Bro. Benny McGath yesterday afternoon to prompt me for us to get the CAB renovation completely finished.  I need to get with John Curl  about the painting and with Tony Hacker to get the excess materials out of the way.  Bernard has a little more work to do paint (trim) wise too.  Bro. Benny is going to help repair the ceiling as well.  We are almost there and I appreciate Bro. Benny helping move this project to completion.

I pray that you will have a great Tuesday with Jesus.

7/11/11 UPDATE

Lois Kirschenman just called (3:00PM) to say that the results of the scans she had taken revealed no cancerous activity – only scar tissue from her bout with pneumonia.  Praise the Lord!  Lois gives God the glory and we join her in doing so!

MONDAY, 7/11/11

Wow, the Lord blessed us with another good day yesterday.  What a joy to welcome three more folks into the Friendship family on transfer of letter.  Yes, God gives the increase and we give Him the glory!  Our attendance was very strong in all three services and that is a God thing too!  The college ministry of Hurley Baptist did a nice job of sharing through drama during our evening service.  So, to God be the glory, great things He has done!

We introduced Herbert Benefield, Bill Kendrick, and Max Peacock as our newest deacons yesterday morning.  Pray for these men as they begin serving in this capacity on August 1.  All three are “new” to our deacon rotation but have been ordained previously by other churches.

Sueanna Bryant and Tate “should” be coming home today.  All is well with mother and son.

Leasa Salter came home from the the hospital this past Friday.  Pray as she recovers at home.

Steven & Morgan Kelley are expecting their first child and it is thought that he will arrive via c-section either this Thursday or Friday.  Of course this will be Bro. Kerry & Miss Barbara’s second grandchild.  Pray that these final few days of this pregnancy will go well.

Bro. Johnny Tucker has a team in Guatemala this week and that team will be replaced this Thursday by a team being led by Bro. Jerry Hovel and Pastor Travis Northcutt.   Pray for both of these teams.

I was told at church last night that the three year old son of the Dauphin Way Baptist Church pastor has been diagnosed with leukemia.  It is my understanding that they have taken him to St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis.

Leave it to the folks in Michigan!  I read over the weekend where a lady is possibly going to jail for 93 days because she has a vegetable garden in her front yard.  Once you meet folks like Tom Compagner, Ross Genzink, & Dave Westhouse this does not surprise you!  LOL!

Parath & I are very excited about the USA women’s soccer team and their improbable victory over Brazil yesterday.  I may take a day of vacation on Wednesday so I can watch the game against France.  Wait, how much is a plane ticket go Germany?

I pray that you will have a great Monday with Jesus!

WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES

“Betty Ford was the wife of former president Gerald Ford. She married Mr. Ford two weeks before he was elected to his first term in Congress. Gerald Ford died in December 2006, after undergoing surgery for an undisclosed ailment in April 2007.”

The above quote was taken from an article in a national publication (online version) about Betty Ford’s passing.  I found it very interesting that President Ford died in 2006 and then had surgery in 2007.  (If I did not know better, I would think that I was the one who wrote that article.)

The moral of this post – we all make mistakes.  Thank God for second chances and may we ever be people who can forgive, forget, and move on.

By the way, I have changed my name to Chum!  After a good number of trips into the Gulf, it got me yesterday.  (Turns out, the red snapper were safe!)  Odd thing is that I have been in much rougher seas.  I have thought through it and have decided that it probably was simply being in the boat with Soy too many hours!  LOL!  (I will possibly ease up on Soy once Soyetta is here!)

I hope this entry is mistak free!  If you live in this area, hope to see you tomorrow in our services.

FRIDAY, 7/8/11

Planking is something that the pastor, staff, and leadership of Friendship Baptist Church do not condone, encourage, promote, et cetera.  As a matter of fact, we strongly discourage and disapprove of doing things, planking or otherwise, that are illegal i.e. trespassing, being disrespectful to other folks and/or their property, et cetera.  Questions/comments?  Feel free to contact me personally.  I would rather not use this page to take your comments pro or con.   Thanks!

Our students will be going to the Baybears game tonight.  Bro. Chris will throw out the first pitch (ball) and Jennifer Kelley will sign the national anthem.  You would need to contact Bro. Chris for the details.

Our Sunday night service is going to be different – again!  This time it will feature the college ministry of Hurley Baptist Church where Wade Ivey is the pastor.  They will be doing drama.  I am told that several members of this group have parents who work at Chevron.  I am also told by Francine Ivey and others that the message presented by this ministry is powerful.  I encourage you to attend this service.  If it goes well, you can applaud Bro. Chris.  If it does not go well, you can blame me!  I am believing it will go well!

The events in Grand Rapids yesterday were sad.  Because of GRACE Ministries, Lisa & I know several folks who live/work in GR and we have been downtown many times.  Pray for the families affected by the events of yesterday.

Speaking of GRACE, Bro. Johnny Tucker’s team arrived safely yesterday.  Pray that they will have a great week of ministry.

It is early in the morning and I am about to hit Walmart before hitting the Gulf.  No red snapper is safe today!  I pray that you will have a great Friday with Jesus.  Hope to see many members of the Friendship family in our services this Sunday!
